We were commissioned by Richard Caring to refurbish the famous London members club roof garden. The original interiors of the club when Mark Birley owned it were by Nicky Haslam and they were our starting off point, as I suggested that we took our lead from the interior to make it a seamless space from inside to outside. At this time the smoking ban came into play so the appearance of the roof garden became more important. We re-painted the existing trellis, added ceramic outside heaters, blinds and a canopy to enable the space to be used year round. We used terracotta containers planted with an assortment of evergreens and herbaceous plants, like a country house style to keep with the period of the interior, and we used copper light fittings to keep with the theme. The most exciting development was the exterior upholstered furniture, where we choose exterior fabrics which looked like the interior fabrics, hence the furniture is able to be left outside 24/7. As you will see it looks like an extension of the interior yet its outside.
