DESIGN PROCESS

Our design process normally follows the work stages outlined below. These are very similar to Architectural work stages and are as published by the Society of Garden Designers (www.sgd.org.uk). Not all projects require all stages.

work Stage A - initial consultation

We generally start with an initial meeting with the prospective client(s), normally at the project site. We can then familiarise ourselves with the site, take a photographic record, discuss the ‘hopes and dreams’ for the garden, understand key features and issues, and generally get to know one another. On the basis of this initial consultation we will develop a Design Brief where we outline our understanding of the clients objectives, and a Fee Proposal indicating our fees for the work involved.

work stage b - outline proposals / presentation schemE

This is the main design phase of the project. We will start by collecting whatever information is already available for the site; topographic survey (which may need to be commissioned if not available), architectural plans for the building and 3D models if available. For small London gardens we can often make a survey visit to survey the site ourselves.

For larger, more complex projects, we may have an interim meeting to discuss preliminary ideas in sketch form, blocking out paving, lawns, planting etc. to show the general layout.

At the end of Stage B when the proposals are fully developed, we will have a Presentation meeting with the client(s), where we will illustrate our proposals for the garden, with a combination of Mood Board(s), coloured 2D plans, 3D renders and reference images. The plans will show general materials (stone, gravel, lawn, trees, hedges and general planting areas). Where relevant we will have suggestions for pots and outdoor furniture with some physical samples.

WORK STAGES C & D - construction & planting details

Here we develop the design further, incorporating any feedback received at the Presentation, Depending on the requirements of the specific project, we will produce detailed setting out drawings for the hard landscape, together with construction details. Materials will be selected and specified and the costings prepared.

WORK STAGE E - TENDER DOCUMENTATION

If the works are to be tendered, then a tender package of drawings, specifications and schedule of works can be provided. We will also work up detailed planting plans & plant specifications, and we are normally involved in plant procurement.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Once the work commences on site, we can make regular site visits, field queries and help to resolve any issues which may arise during the construction.
